* Case Law and Case Law Abstracts .-

Palacio Legislativo

The selection of judicial resolutions is made most objectively in order to show them as representative of the main trends in this matter. The criteria for selection are graded; the basis is composed of choice resolutions issued in all instances by the higher Courts of the country, indicating the corresponding confirmation or reversal, offering a variety of legal topics and, essentially, of important legal issues dealt with and decided by the Courts. Our purpose is to promptly provide the readers with the most recent resolutions on the corresponding subjects (current and updated). Each bimonthly issue of our publication contains the transcription of documents selected from the latest collections of judgments (and courts are encouraged to put their decisions and material at our disposal, as far as possible, within the month of issue -for the higher Courts- and within the three months following the day of publication or the delivery of a copy thereof to the parties, for the lower Courts, thus following a universally accepted practice).

Palacio de Justicia

As to the presentation of judgments and documents, the texts are unabridged. In the paper edition, those referring to case law abstracts are at the readers' disposal in our office. In the Internet version the documents corresponding to such case law abstracts are not abridged, either. The search for documents containing judicial resolutions is made faster and more effective by means of headings and headlines, key words, fixed vocabulary, abstracts, comments, summaries and analyses, information on the challenging means filed by the parties and annotations referring to legislation, judgments and doctrine. All the above and generally the bases, analytical structures and data compilation are protected by copyright, as they constitute an original intellectual creation, as well as the rest of the material gathered for publication. In the production of said works many legal scholars (especially university professors and legal writers, and judges) have collaborated since the initial numbers of our paper. Their knowledge has brought to this collection its fundamental features, thus shaping the first criteria for the legal and documentary analysis and for the compilation of the indexes and files of the time. As from the year 1996 (Volume 113) experts in legal and computer analysis of international renown have collaborated with us, deserving from all the readership a well earned acknowledgment, both in continental as well as in common law countries. Today our publication has consolidated on the basis of present-day criteria, as now we are in possession of the necessary experience as regards both modern doctrinal approaches and recent legal provisions (i.e., the General Code of Procedure, that ten years ago introduced hearing system proceedings). This will be essential for the addition of computer science practices in the field of law, for Uruguayan as well as for foreign readers.

Users of the Legal Information System .-

Judges and the State Attorneys are our select readers. We may state that our paper is resorted to by all of them. It has always afforded them great advantages in their access to legal information. Lawyers, Notaries Public, Law Firms (both lawyers' and notaries') Legal Departments of private companies and Public Agencies, Court assistants and collaborators (auctioneers, auditors) and Judicial Experts (physicians, architects, engineers, etc.) make up the legal and judicial world to which our paper is addressed, as an inescapable reference. Abroad, the main Universities and Higher Legal Learning Institutions -mainly Comparative Law Institutes- are the most qualified clients, who find in our Collection the necessary references on Uruguayan Law and the application thereof. For example, the Congress of the United States Library, the Max Planck Institute at Freiburg and others.
